Intervals Quizzes

Being able to recognise musical intervals is incredibly important, as it’s the first step to being able to identify chords, which leads to an understanding of harmony and modulations, and more. It’s also necessary to understand intervals before you can do transposition!

For the early grades, intervals need to be recognised by number only (e.g. “2nd, 4th”, etc.)

Around grade 3 (depending on the exam board) the interval qualities of major, minor and perfect are introduced.

This is followed by augmented and diminished intervals, as well as compound intervals (those greater than one octave).

By grade 5, you need to be ably to recognise any interval by number and quality. Some exam boards will also test you in different clefs.

For grade 6, you will likely be asked to identify intervals within a score, which often means comparing notes in different clefs. The intervals themselves may become more complex, with more double sharps and flats, for example.

By grade 8, you are also expected to know how each orchestral instrument transposes into/out of concert pitch. Transposition of one or more notes is often necessary, in order to work out the interval. You may also get a mix of clefs as well!

On this page you can test your knowledge with two quizzes! The Grade 5 Intervals Quiz tests you on interval number and quality only. The Grade 8 Intervals Quiz includes questions with mixed clefs and transposition as well.
